Traditional Cheese Show


Mostar is a small city located in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is more and more popular destination because of its nature and cultural heritage. One of the most interesting events you can participate in - it's the Traditional Cheese Show. This event is held every year in mid November at the Herceg Stjepan Kosaca Cultural Centre in Mostar. There gather local manufacturers who want to present their goods and take part in a competition, which is organised for cheese makers. Every year, new winners in on of 3 categories (“cheese from Travnik”, „cheese from Livno”, „Sack cheese”) are chosen. This unique exhibition is organized by the Sheep Cheese and Meat Producers Association “Pramenka” and it is a first step to improve and increase a level of cheese production and sales.
Few more words about mentioned cheeses:
Travnik cheese also known as Vlasicki Sir is produced in the area of the Mount Vlasic. It is made with local cows' and sheeps' milk. The tradition of cheese production is very long and the recipe of the rennet is kept in a secret. The 20 – kilos cheese is cut into one- or two-kilo cubes and placed in brine, in wooden containers and sold in that form only in Travnik. Of course, you can buy this cheese somewhere else but in plastic bags.
Livno cheese comes from from the area of Livno. It has been made since the 19th century. Today, it is produced with a combination of sheep's and cow's milk. Its flavor is robust and slightly tangy.
Sack cheese or Sir iz Mijeha is so popular and unique because of its container. The sack is made from sheepskin. The cheese is a mixture of two kind of milk – cow's and sheep's.
